Red-necked Francolin - The Red-necked Francolin breeds across the central belt of Africa and down the east coast to Tanzania.

 

Gray-winged Francolin - The Grey-winged Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Lesotho and South Africa.

 

Ahanta Francolin - The Ahanta Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Benin, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

 

Double-spurred Francolin - Like most francolins, it is restricted to Africa. It is a resident breeder in tropical west Africa, but there is a small and declining isolated population in Morocco.

 

Cameroun Mountain Francolin - Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Cape Francolin - The sexes are similar in plumage, but the male has two leg spurs whereas the female has at best one short spur The juvenile is similar to the adults, but has duller legs and clearer vermiculations. This large dark francolin is unlikely to be confused with any other species in its range.

 

Chestnut-naped Francolin - The Chestnut-naped Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Ethiopia, Somalia, and possibly Kenya.

Clapperton’s Francolin - The Clapperton's Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, and Uganda.

Erckell’s Francolin - The Erckel's Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is native to Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan. In 1957 the species was also introduced to the Hawaiian islands.

 

Finsch’s Francolin - The Finsch's Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Angola, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon.

Black francolin - It is one of the few francolins to have a range outside Africa. It is a resident breeder from Kashmir, Cyprus and south-eastern Turkey eastwards through Iran to southwest Turkmenistan and northeast India. Its range was formerly more extensive, but over-hunting has reduced its distribution and numbers. There have been a number of introductions, but most have failed to take root although some populations still persist in the USA and elsewhere.

Haartlaub - A small, squat bird; both sexes of this species have disproportionately large bills for their size . The bare parts are mostly a dull yellow; the large bill is a brownish yellow.

 

Hildebrandt - The Hildebrandt's Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia. The species is named for Johannes Hildebrandt, who collected the first specimens in Kenya.

Natal Francolin - The Natal Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

 

Handsome Francolin - The Handsome Francolin is distributed in mountain forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southwest Uganda and borders between Burundi and Rwanda. It is a shy and elusive bird, more often heard than seen. The diet consists mainly of seeds.

 

Djibouti Francolin - The Djibouti Francolin, Francolinus ochropectus, is one of over forty species of francolins, a group of birds in the Phasianidae family. It is critically endangered and found only in Djibouti, a nation in eastern Africa. This species is grayish-brown overall with white stripes and streaks on its underparts which become finer towards the upperparts. It has black markings on the head and a gray crown and has a short tail. It is 35 cm in length, and weighs 940 g .

 

Painted Francolin - This species is endemic to the Indian Subcontinent. It is distributed patchily from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh south into peninsular India and in Sri Lanka. The species interbreeds with the Black Francolin along its northern margin and appears similar to the female of that species but has no rufous hindcollar, instead having a bright rufous face and throat. The underside has white spots while the legs are orange-yellow to red.

 

Chinese Francolin - The Chinese Francolin is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family. It is found in Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Grey Francolin - The Grey Francolin Francolinus pondicerianus is a species of partridge found in the plains and drier parts of South Asia. They are found in open cultivated lands as well as scrub forest and their local name of teetar is based on their calls, a loud and repeated Ka-tee-tar - tee-tar which is produced by one or more birds. The term teetar however can also refer other partridges and quails. During the breeding season calling males attract challengers and the decoys were used to trap these birds especially for "fights".

The species is named after Sir Edward Shelley, cousin of George Ernest Shelley.
