The Swainson's Francolin is all dark brown, streaked with black. It is a common species of more open country, preferring bushveld with open spaces, and farmland areas. It is not found in dense woodland or forested areas. It is usually seen singly or small parties. This francolin runs quickly when disturbed, and flies on whirring wings when flushed. It eats seeds, berries, shoots, bulbs, insects and molluscs. More

The Swainson's Francolin (Pternistes swainsonii) is also called Swainson's Spurfowl (Francolinus swainsonii) by some authors. The species ranges across south and central Africa in woodlands, brushlands and farmlands. It has been widely introduced in many other areas. The one shown here was in Kruger National Park, South Africa, in January, 2006. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and 1.4X extender. More
