Genus Cuculus

Khasia Hills cuckoo - This species is a widespread summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters in Africa. It is a brood parasite, which lays its eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly of Dunnocks, Meadow Pipits, and Eurasian Reed Warblers.

 

Black Cuckoo - The Black Cuckoo is a medium sized cuckoo. The plumage varies by subspecies, Cuculus clamosus clamosus is either almost entirely black with a white buff on the chest or entirely black; Cuculus clamosus gabonensis is mostly black with a red throat and black and white barring on the belly.

 

Sulawesi Hawk-Cuckoo - The Sulawesi Cuckoo is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is often known as the Sulawesi Hawk-cuckoo but appears not to be related to the other hawk-cuckoos. It is endemic to Sulawesi Island in Indonesia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Hodgson - The Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo, Cuculus fugax is a species of cuckoo found in south, east and southeast Asia.

African Cuckoo - The African Cuckoo is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is found in Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

 

Cuculus lepidus - It is 29-30 cm long.

Short-winged Cuckoo - This is a medium sized cuckoo with both sexes alike. It has grey upperparts while the underside has broad black barring. The tail is barred with a broad subterminal dark band and a white tip. Young birds have white markings on the crown and white chin and throat contrasting with a dark face. Juveniles are browner and have broad white tips to the head and wing feathers. The eye-ring is gray to yellow . The iris is light brown to reddish. The female differs from the male in being slightly paler grey on the throat and in having more brown on the breast and tail. The barring on the belly is narrower than in the male. Nestlings have an orange-red mouth and yellow flanges to the gape.

 

Oriental Cuckoo - The Oriental Cuckoo or Horsfields Cuckoo is a bird belonging to the genus Cuculus in the cuckoo family Cuculidae. It was formerly classified as a subspecies of the Himalayan Cuckoo with the name Oriental Cuckoo used for the combined species. Differences in voice and size suggest that they should be treated as a separate species.

Pallid Cuckoo - The Pallid Cuckoo is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is found in Australia, Christmas Island, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.

 

Small Cuckoo - It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Malawi, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of India, Russia, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

 

Madagascar Cuckoo - The Madagascar Cuckoo is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is found in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia.

 

Himalayan cuckoo - It was formerly known as "Oriental Cuckoo" and contained several subspecies found over most of Asia. In 2005, it was determined that this "species" constitutes of three distinct lineages:

 

Red-chested Cuckoo - It is found in Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. In Southern Africa it is a common breeding migrant, found throughout the area except for the drier west.

 

Large Hawk Cuckoo - The Large Hawk-cuckoo is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family.

 

Moustached Hawk-Cuckoo - The Moustached Hawk-cuckoo is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Common Hawk Cuckoo - The Common Hawk-cuckoo Cuculus varius also popularly known as the Brainfever bird due to its call, is a medium sized cuckoo resident in South Asia. It bears a close resemblance to the Shikra, a sparrow hawk, even in its style of flying and perching. The resemblance to hawks gives this group the generic name of hawk-cuckoo and like many other cuckoos these are brood parasites, laying their eggs in nests of babblers and laughing-thrushes with the chicks brought up by the foster parents.
