Bar-winged Rail

It was a flightless island ground-nesting forest/freshwater swamp dweller and is believed to have disappeared after the introduction of the mongoose and cats to the islands.

The Bar-winged Rail is classified as Extinct (EX), there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died.

The Bar-winged Rail (Nesoclopeus poecilopterus) was a species of bird in the Rallidae family. It was endemic to Fiji and was last collected ca 1890 in Viti Levu. The species was idenitifed from twelve 19th century specimens, some of which are known to be in Boston, London and New York. The last unconfirmed sighting of this bird was in 1973. More

In contrast, the bar-winged rail is only known from Fiji and so is a species lost forever. It has only one relative in the genus Nesoclopeus and that is N. woodfordi from the Solomon Islands. Two Fijian names were recorded from this rail - sasa and saca. The Bar-winged rail was a medium-large rail which would have stood at about 30 cm. The Bar-winged Rail is another elusive bird which is considered to be extinct, though recently a sighting has been claimed. It had not been seen since 1890, but was reported in 1973 by David Holyoak, who caught a glimpse of a bird near Vunindawa on Vitu Levu which seemed to fit the description of the Bar-winged Rail. It is therefore possible that the species still survives in the inaccessible marshes of the Fiji Islands. More
