The Rock Partridge is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

The Rock Partridge is a stunning bird of the grouse family - one of my favourites, really. They are also incredibly difficult to find in the Tirolean Alps, and I only know of a few places where they have been recorded. Rock Partridge digiscoped with Canon EOS 5D mark II, TLS800 telescope photography adapter, and Swarovski Optik STM80HD telescope, in Alpenzoo. My one encounter thus far with real wild Rock Partridges here in Tirol was last spring up near Kühtai. More

The Rock Partridge, Alectoris graeca, is a gamebird in the pheasant family Phasianidae of the order Galliformes, gallinaceous birds. This partridge has its main (native) range in southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe, and is closely related and very similar to its eastern equivalent, the Chukar, A. chukar. This is a resident breeder in dry, open and often hilly country. It nests in a scantily lined ground scrape laying 5-21 eggs. More

The bird known as Rock Partridge in English is actually a member of another genus, the Alectoris graeca. The confusion is further compounded as in some languages Alectoris species are known by names that literally translate as stone partridge. In Dutch, steenpatrij, in German Steinhuhn; Red-legged Partridge (A. rufa) being rode steenpatrij in Dutch. Further complication arises as, particularly within the USA, the name "rock partridge" has been used for a variety of Alectoris species and hybrids. More

The Rock Partridge is a rotund bird, with a light brown back, grey breast and buff belly. The face is white with a black gorget. It has rufous-streaked flanks and red legs. When disturbed, it prefers to run rather than fly, but if necessary it flies a short distance on rounded wings. It is very similar to the Chukar, but is greyer on the back and has a white, not yellowish foreneck. The sharply defined gorget distinguishes this species from Red-legged Partridge. More

Sicilian rock partridge, however, was rooted more in hunting than in birdwatching. Rock partridge are delicious. The rock partridge is part of the Phasianidae family, which includes pheasants, quails and certain birds sometimes identified taxonomically as grouses. The "woodcock" referred to, in English translation, in The Leopard were, presumably rock partridge (coturnice in Italian), though true woodcock belong to a different family entirely. More

French Alps 2008 - Rock Partridge at last! Last bank holiday weekend, I met up with former Cambs birder extraordinaire John Oates to search for a bird that we have both heard, but never seen - the Rock Partridge (Perdrix bartavelle). Our plan was to bird a road that runs north from Termignon into the Vanoise National Park, the same road from which Marcel and I had Snow Finch, Lammergeier, Rock Thrush and other Alpine specialities two years earlier.
