Facts about the genus Uromys, the giant naked-tailed rats
The volcanic inner arc of the new subduction zone, like all such arcs highly unstable, saw the rise and fall of islands all along it; Uromys is present even today on New Britain, and if a hypothetic primitive Uromys was present in, perhaps, the Pliocene, shifting volcanics could have isolated a population and carried it sequentially southeast as far as Guadalcanal.
The Giant white-tailed Uromys is a propagator for macadamia nuts and rainforest truffles. (Full text)
