The Hume's Owl or Hume's Tawny Owl (Strix butleri) is a species of owl. As its alternative name implies, it is closely related to the more widespread Tawny Owl. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping is the barn owls, Tytonidae. Hume's Owl breeds in Syria, Israel, northeast Egypt and the Arabian peninsula. Its habitat is palm groves, desert, semi-desert and rocky ravines. More

Hume's owls we saw around Little Petra in just one hour. I was the lighting director as usual... Having just seen six birds in just three night sessions, I think it is safe to say that seeing Hume's owl in Jordan is much easier than in neighbouring Israel. I saw my first bird without a tape by just wandering along the road below Dana village (down into Wadi Dana) at night. It was just 300 metres from the village. More

Hume's Owl - Petra siq has been a site for many years; the only trouble is that they now don't let you in late in the evening unless part of a candle-lit visit. I don't know if anyone has seen/heard one there recently. Wadi Rum area is perhaps a better bet. Whilst camping in Wadi Umm Ishrin, next to Rum, I have heard and seen them on several occasions. There are many other potential sites -including the lower reaches of Wadi Dana/Feinan and Wadi Muijb. More
