Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl and the Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl had previously been thought to belong to the species Andean Pygmy-Owl. Although all the New World's pygmy-owls have songs of hollow whistles or toots, the length of the notes and the intervals between notes provide clues to the species identifications that can be confirmed using genetic analysis and by observing subtle but consistent physical differences. This Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl was in April 2008 in the Central mountain range of Costa Rica. I was very surprised when we just happened to pull off the road and heard a pygmy-owl calling. When I started whistling to the owl three of them flew in... this one was very close (maybe just 10 feet overhead!). Click here to return to the Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl Multimedia page. More
