It is often confused with the Red-fronted Barbet but it is significantly smaller than that species, has a black moustache and a less robust bill, and lacks a broad yellow superciliary stripe. At about 100 repetitions per minute, the Red -fronted Tinkerbird's call is a fast tink-tink-tink-tink, very similar to that of Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird . Many barbets perch prominently, but, unlike their larger relatives, the smaller tinkerbirds sing from cover and are more frequently heard than seen. More

The red-fronted barbetis a northeast African endemic. The upper images were made in Orkesumet in October 2006. The other bird was seen in Engikaret in June 2008. They prefer drier country as these locations suggest. The Macaulay Library has several good recordings of this bird. More

There are 2 races of Red-fronted Barbet present in Kenya, T. d. diademata (pictured above) and T. d. massaica. The main distinguishing feature is the amount of spotting and streaking present on the body. T. d. diademata has a few large blackish spots on its flanks, it is found mainly in the N of the country. T. d. massaica has a larger number of small spots and streaks on its underside. More
