Pteroglossus bailloni

The Saffron Toucanet is a species of bird in the Ramphastidae family. It was formerly placed in the monotypic genus Baillonius, but Kimura et al. was able to show that the Saffron Toucanet belong in the genus Pteroglossus. It is found in Atlantic Forest in far north-eastern Argentina, south-eastern Brazil, and eastern Paraguay.

The Pteroglossus bailloni is classified as Near Threatened (NT), is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.

Pteroglossus bailloni, Plate-billed Mountain-toucan Andigena laminirostris, and the Grey-breasted Mountain-toucan Andigena hypoglauca are all near-threatened. Some authors lump the Barbets Capitonidae within this family. Toucans are restricted to Central and South America. Aulacorhynchus There are 6 species in the genus. Emerald Toucanet Aulacorhynchus prasinus at Monteverde, Costa Rica, April 2009. Pteroglossus There are 14 species in the genus. More

Pteroglossus bailloni Saffron Toucanet This sequence, with the exception of bailloni, formerly placed in monotypic Baillonius, is derived largely from the relationship predicted by Haffer (1974) based on plumage and voice. New information: Pereira & Wajntal (2008) retrieved sequences from GenBank for all taxa for ATPase/6, COI, and cyt-b to generate 2158 bp aligned sequences. Their Bayesian analysis resolved most nodes, although the % sequence divergence was low among most terminal taxa. More

MrBayes and a tree in which Pteroglossus bailloni was forced to be a separate sister genus (following the classical systematics of the group), we applied the approximately unbiased (AU) test (Shimodaira, 2002) as implemented in the program CONSEL version 0.1f (Shimodaira and Hasegawa, 2001). The AU test uses a multiscale bootstrap technique and site log-likelihoods when computing p-values for the topologies being tested. More
