It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

The Great Jacamar (Jacamerops aureus) is a species of bird in the Galbulidae family. It is placed in the monotypic genus Jacamerops. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Only the Great Jacamar varies from the rest of the family, taking prey by gleaning and occasionally taking small lizards and spiders. Breeding The breeding systems of jacamars have not been studied in depth. They are thought to generally be monogamous, although a few species are thought to sometimes engage in cooperative breeding with several adults sharing duties. The family nests in holes either in the soil or in arboreal termite mounds. More
Photo of a female great jacamar, made by Peter Relson in Suriname in January 2002 in the Brownsberg nature park. The male would show a white throat patch (but in photographs you are never sure whether it will show up). It can sit silently for long times, only now and then flying away to catch some prey (larger insects and spiders I suppose). They are found in the middle of the forest. More

Great Jacamar is a seldom-reported and perhaps declining resident of the deep forests of the Canal area, seen occasionally on Pipeline Road and with decreasing frequency on Semaphore Hill. I've managed to rustle up perhaps 2-3 reports for each of the last several years, including the first record from Cerro Azul, from a VENT tour group in October of 2006. More
