The Streamer-tailed Tyrant is a distinctive resident of Buriti palm groves and seasonally wet grassland from western Bolivia to central Brazil and to northeastern Argentina. Overall these birds appear pale gray with black wings that are highlighted by a patch of cinnamon at the base of the primaries. Aptly named, the Streamer-tailed Tyrant has a long deeply forked tail. Streamer-tailed Tyrants often perch conspicuously on the tops of low trees and bushes and utter a harsh repeated "wurreep" call. More

Streamer-tailed Tyrant (©Nick Athanas)Our day at Macaé de Cima was surely one of the most memorable of the trip. The weather was not promising - a chilly, windy morning with periods of drizzle. Strange-tailed tyrant and streamer-tailed tyrant in Argentina - Hi all, I spent a month in Argentina at Christmas just gone. Whilst it was not a pure birding trip, I did get lots of information on birding sites to make the most of our time there. One of the species that I did really want to see out there was Strange-tailed Tyrant, but I did not find any trip reports that mentioned the species. More

The Streamer-tailed Tyrant is already a big bird even before you take into account the ridiculously long streamers that make up his tail! It is a sociable inhabitant of grassland areas, usually close to water, where they hawk for insects. Displaying males fan the tail and lift their wings in an effort to woo nearby females.FIGURE 1 - Adult male, Estancia Laguna Blanca, Departamento San Pedro (Hemme Batjes November 2005). More
