The Penduline Tit is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

The Eurasian Penduline Tit Remiz pendulinus is not a tit (Paridae) but one of thirteen members of the Remidae, a family ranging right across Eurasia (Remiz and Cephalopyrus), throughout Africa (Anthoscopus and Pholidornis), and - if current thinking is followed - is represented in the Nearctic by the Verdin Auriparus flaviceps. All members build elaborate “hanging-basket” nests - except for the Verdin and the Fire-capped Tit of South-east Asia. More

Penduline Tits are a small family of tiny passerines found mostly in Eurasia and Africa, with a single example in the New World. They are arboreal and insectivorous, like this Southern Penduline-Tit (left) of southern Africa. They are generally found in pairs or small groups. Habitat preferences include open woodlands in Eurasian species, but also thornscrub in Africa and southwestern North America. More

The European Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus) is a passerine of the genus Remiz. It is relatively widespread throughout Eurasia. The Asian (sub)species include the Black-headed Penduline Tit, Remiz macronyx, the White-crowned Penduline Tit, Remiz coronatus, and the Chinese Penduline Tit, Remiz consobrinus. It builds an elaborate hanging nest, formerly used in Central Europe as children's slippers. This species was first described as Motacilla pendulinus by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae in 1758. More

The penduline tits are a family of small passerine birds, related to the true tits. All but the Verdin and Fire-capped Tit make elaborate bag nests hanging from trees (whence "penduline", hanging), usually over water; inclusion of the Fire-capped Tit in this family is disputed by some authorities. There are 10 species of penduline tit in four genera, according to Peters (1934–1986). However, classification is problematic. Traditionally they are placed in their own family, the Remizidae, but more recent classification based on DNA analysis suggests they may be better placed as a subfamily (Remizinae) in a larger Paridae family, which also includes the true tits, i.e. chickadees (Sibley and Ahlquist 1990). Penduline tits can be found throughout most of central and southern Europe. "If you are a penduline tit your perfect partner is one that is happy to stay home and look after the kids, whilst you go off and find a new partner," said Dr Tamas Szekely from the University of Bath (UK) who worked with colleagues from Eotvos University (Hungary) and University of Groningen (Netherlands). The Penduline Tit is not a tit at all, though it certainly looks like one. Adult Penduline Tits are very distinctive with their grey heads and bold black eye-masks, duller on the females, but the juveniles can be puzzlingly dull. They look basically all brown but their small size, tit-like manner and rounded greyish-brown heads should separate them from all small birds except juvenile Bearded Tits which are larger, longer-tailed and have heavily patterned wings. The penduline tit (Remiz pendulinus) is irregularly distributed in river scrub and marshes across Eurasia. An 11-cm- (4.5-inch-) long brownish bird with a black mask on its whitish head, it is named for its two-chambered nest (built by the male), which consists of a finely felted bag of plant down or wool, suspended from the tip of a branch (sometimes in reeds).
