Red Munia

The Red Munia, Red Avadavat or Strawberry Finch is a sparrow-sized bird of the Munia family. It is found in the open fields and grasslands of tropical Asia and is popular as a cage bird due to the colourful plumage of the males in their breeding season. It breeds in South Asia during the Monsoon season. The species name of amandava and the common name of avadavat are derived from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat from where these birds were exported into the pet trade in former times.

Red Munia is a sparrow sized small bird. The picture you see is that of a male. The female looks similar except that the red plumage around the head is replaced by brown plumage. They lay eggs in specially constructed nest. The nest is generally constructed close to the ground in thick bushes. It takes 3 to 4 weeks for the egg to hatch and may be another 3 to 4 weeks before the chicks can start flying. More
