Yellow-shouldered Grassquit

The Yellow-shouldered Grassquit is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

The Yellow-shouldered Grassquit (Loxipasser anoxanthus) is a species of bird in the Thraupidae family. Sometimes classified in the bunting and American sparrow family Emberizidae, more recent studies have shown it to belong in the tanager family. It is monotypic within the genus Loxipasser. It is endemic to Jamaica. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and heavily degraded former forest. More

Robert had mentioned that Yellow-shouldered Grassquits were being seen quite regularly this year, often to the bushes to the right of the house, near the start of the track, so I spent the last of the daylight staking out this area, but with no luck. Towards the end of the afternoon, Ann returned - she had been on a trip to Barbuda studying their important population of West Indian Whistling Ducks - and we agreed to go out after dark to look for Jamaican Owl.
