Unicolored Jay

The Unicolored Jay is an Aphelocoma jay native to cloud forests of northwestern Central America and southern and southeastern Mexico, from central Honduras west to central Guerrero, southern Veracruz and extreme southern San Luis Potosi. It is apparently a basal member of its genus .

The Unicolored Jay is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

Unicolored Jay population and two Scrub Jay populations, all strongly differentiated, are placed consistently at the base of the phylogeny, but phenotypic, biogeographic, and theoretical evidence suggests that these populations represent rapidly evolving populations derived from within populations of their respective species. Because analyses of rates of molecular evolution demonstrate significant rate heterogeneity, I suggest that the application of a molecular clock to date-splitting events in the Aphelocoma jays is not a valid approach. One species, Unicolored Jay, is blue all over, similar to the Pinyon Jay from much further north. The bill, legs and feet are black. Behaviour - Food is taken both on the ground and in trees. Acorns and pine nuts are the most important foods, making up the great bulk of the diet, with grain, berries and other fruits making up the rest of the vegetable diet. More
