White-crowned Koel

The White-crowned Cuckoo or White-crowned Koel is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is often placed in the monotypic genus Caliechthrus but it has a similar song to cuckoos of the genus Cacomantis and is genetically similar to the Pallid Cuckoo . It is found in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, occurring on New Guinea and neighbouring Salawati Island.

The White-crowned Koel is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

White-crowned Koel Cacomantis leucolophus These things are hard to see but we managed to get one in at Varirata, the same place as on my last trip here. Heard at Dablin too. Formerly included with koels in the monotypic genus Caliecthrus, but now reassigned. (Oriental Cuckoo Cuculus optatus) This Asian migrant may have been the mystery cuckoo sat bolt upright on a snag along the Fly R. just after dawn, but we never clinched it. More
