It has a broad and varied diet, eating a wide variety of animals, rarely eating fish. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is a burrow, normally dug into the walls of gullies. The Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) is widespread over southeast Africa. The one shown here was near Lataba Camp, in Kruger National Park, Limpopo Province, South Africa in January, 2006. The photos were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and a 1.4X extender. The bird is a little ratty looking because it is moulting at this time of year. More
