Papuan Nightjar

The Papuan Nightjar is a species of nightjar in the Caprimulgidae family. It is found in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.

The Papuan Nightjar has sometimes been placed in Lyncornis, but it is more closely related to the other Eurostopodus. Since it's thought to be close to the Cloud-forest and Satanic Nightjars, I leave them in Eurostopodus too. The next surprise is the Collared Nightjar, formerly Caprimulgus enarratus, which seems to be sister to the remaining nightjars and nighthawks. Han et al. we were lucky to observe a Papuan Nightjar as it hawked for insects over the river at dusk.
