The female Fiery-throated Hummingbird is entirely responsible for nest building and incubation. She lays two white eggs in a bulky plant-fibre cup nest 2-4 m high at the end of a descending bamboo stem or on a rootlet under a bank. Incubation takes 15-19 days, and fledging another 20-26. The food of this species is nectar, taken from a variety of small flowers, including epiphytic Ericaceae and bromeliads. More

I took this picture of a fiery-throated hummingbird on the mountains of Costa Rica. While there were other kinds of hummingbirds around, this one was the most colorful, especially when the light hits the feathers under its beak at just the right angle. You can see the blue feathers, but just above those are the under-the-right-conditions-very-intense red and yellow feathers. It also was the smallest and most aggressive hummingbird around, chasing and driving away any other hummingbird that came near him. More
