The Rufous-capped Thornbill is found in the eastern Andes from the extreme south-east of Ecuador to west-central Bolivia, but is not common anywhere. It is found regularly along the trails of Jocotoco's Tapichalaca reserve, which is one of the few locations in Ecuador where this species occurs.
