Description: The male Chestnut Teal Anas castanea has an iridescent green head and neck, mottled brown upper parts, a white patch on the flank and a black tail. The wings are dark brown, the underparts chestnut and there is a white patch on the flank. Females lack the iridescent green head and neck and the body is generally darker. i found a male chestnut teal at mangere today photos from others should follow but here are some notes head and upper neck-all dark with green tinge eye-red -no hint of eye ring lower front neck and breast-VERY bright chestnut flanks -fairly bright chestnut white flank patch-only a trace remaining-may have been concealed by drooping wings underwing-a big white patch at and out from axillaries -much more than the grey teal it flew with-john woods got flight photo More

there's been several Chestnut Teal in the Sth Island Tony Crocker found 1 at the Kowai Rivermouth in Nth Canty 10+ yrs ago. It was seen by several birders incl myself, photos taken and UBR accepted. 2 were spotted by Phil Crutchley and Scott Butcher about 3 yrs ago at The Bromley Oxidation Ponds, at the stime the string of rarieties turned up - Whiskered tern, White-eyed Duck, Chestnut teal and Chestnut-breasted Shelduck.
